Through Our Own Eyes 1996-97

Through our own eyes_COVERLOW RES

An ‘artists in schools’ residency programme, which gave training and support to six recent graduates who wished to develop their art practice within an educational context. Collaboration with the University of East London and the Tate Gallery.

Through our Own Eyes was a professional development programme for emerging artists developed at a time before artist in schools training was widely available. It built on the experience of AwakeningsWest Meets East and other schools projects to equip graduates with the necessary skills and competencies to engage successfully in a school environment. Participants were provided with training, support and troubleshooting where difficulties arose. Tate Education provided gallery education support, Andrew Mutter Arts Education Adviser for LB Newham lent his expertise to the training, and Geoff Brunell and John Cockram of University of East London provided student coordination, exhibition curation and report production.
