The Young Person’s Guide to the Royal Docks 2005-07

Our first young person’s guide involving Royal Docks Community School, NewVIc Sixth Form College, Newham College of Further Education and University of East London

YPG2RD report front cover

The Royal Docks is a key site of renewal and cultural heritage within the developing London Thames Gateway region. In anticipation of the massive regeneration about to take place, young people from Royal Docks Community School took a critical look at their own neighbourhoods, framed by both historical context and future plans. With newly acquired photographic skills they recorded and documented their findings to make our first online guide, and precursor to the Young Person’s Guide to East London. Production was linked to the Cascade mentoring programme run for several years by cSPACE at University of East London to allow a transfer of skills, knowledge and experience through different levels of education from university to college to schools – supported by local centres of arts, heritage and industry. Its aim was to create positive learning experiences for all involved, whilst enabling young people to make public comment on issues of regeneration affecting their future lives.
